New Internist Joins HRMC Physicians Clinic

Huron, S.d. – Kristen Hughes, MD, an internal medicine physician, has joined the Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) medical staff, according to Erick Larson, president and CEO for HRMC.

Dr. Hughes joined the HRMC Physicians Clinic on September 7, as both an inpatient and outpatient internal medicine specialist. She provides health care for adolescent through geriatric patients, including assessment, diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Hughes has specialized training to care for complex medical conditions, as well as management of multiple disease processes.

Growing up in a small town in rural Ontario, Canada, Dr. Hughes traveled to complete her medical training, receiving her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts & Nevis. She completed her internal medicine residency at Wayne State University in Michigan. Now, she plans to settle down in Huron with her husband, Thaddeus, and one-year-old son, Micaiah.

“During our first visit to Huron, the HRMC staff was so welcoming and helpful in our transition,” said Dr. Hughes. “I have wonderful memories from my childhood in a small town and hope my son will have the same.”

Dr. Hughes loved every specialty in medical school, but she decided to pursue internal medicine because of the versatility and opportunity to treat patients with a range of needs. She is excited to emphasize patient education in her practice.

“I feel like I have two jobs: treating and teaching,” Dr. Hughes says. “I want my patients to understand all aspects of their treatment. This encourages them to have autonomy over their medical care.”

When she’s not working, Dr. Hughes enjoys spending time with family, baking and running. She is currently accepting new patients and appointments can be made by calling 605-353-7660 or online at www.hrmcphysiciansclinic.org.
