WEATHERING THE STORM – ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH PART 1

Severe winter storms have impacted South Dakota several times recently. In December storms sent temperatures plunging to dangerous lows with heavy snow and whiteout conditions.  As we come out of the holiday season to the time of year with the shortest amount of daylight, many people may think from day to day that they are just weathering the storm.  Mental health issues can affect family and friends without you even being aware of the situation.  We have heard about seasonal affective disorder or Sad, possibly without even thinking it is an actual condition.  Tammy Dramstad, clinical professional development coordinator with Community Counseling in Huron explains that seasonal affective disorder is a real condition.

Dramstad talks about coping mechanisms for someone who is depressed.

In an extreme  case of depression with thoughts of suicide there may be signals from the individual.

More tomorrow with Tammy Dramstad from Community Counseling Services in Huron as we weather the storm addressing mental health.
