Voters Approve Southtown Rezoning Project

Huron voters went to the polls today in a special election to decide whether 10 acres in the Southtown Addition should be rezoned. At stake was the fate of Wheatgrass Village, a proposed apartment and townhouse project in the area that supporters have said is important to future development. Opponents have stated that they don’t oppose the project, just the location.

In the end, the majority of those who went to the polls voted in favor of the rezone.

The project was approved by a vote of 1977-465.

A total of 2442 registered voters cast ballots today, equating to 32% voter turnout. 399 absentee ballots were cast.

Vote Yes For Huron committee co-chair Rich Bragg called the vote “a true turning point for Huron’s future.”

David McGirr, co-chair of the committee with Bragg, says the outcome will help “spur further residential and commercial development that almost certainly would not have happened if the zoning change was turned down by voters”.
