Tiger Athlete Misses State Meet to Begin Basic Training for the Marines

A Huron Tiger athlete was missing from the State Track Meet last weekend.

Senior Josiah Savery would have run the hurdles for Huron but was not at the meet as he had enlisted in the Marines, and left for basic training the previous Monday, May 20.

Huron track coach Tom Baszler says he would have liked Josiah to compete, but completely understood the decision.

Josiah won the Tiger award for boys track, which is given to a senior that displays leadership and work ethic.

He reported for infantry training in San Diego with a goal of serving on the front lines and eventually becoming an officer.

Mitchell pole vaulter Sam Jones made the same decision, leaving for basic training before the state meet.
