This is Severe Weather Awareness Week and the National Weather Service is dedicating each day to educating the public about a specific severe weather threat. Today the focus is on flash flooding.
Beadle County Emergency Management Director Zach Nelson says when it comes to flash flooding the old adage “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” still holds true.
Nelson says most vehicles get caught up in 18 to 24 inches of water. It is called FLASH flooding for a reason, it happens too quickly for some people to react. It’s possible that during flooding or flash flooding, the road surface has been washed away. Generally flood water is difficult to see through so there is no way of knowing if the road is still intact and how deep the water is.
