Huron and Area Schools Compete at High School Science Bowl Saturday

Twelve South Dakota high schools will compete in a state-wide science and math competition Feb. 16 for the chance to represent South Dakota at the Department of Energy National Science Bowl
this spring.

The 26th annual South Dakota Regional High School Science Bowl, hosted by Western Area Power Administration, will be held at the Huron Event Center, 100 4th Street SW, in Huron beginning at 8 a.m. After a morning round robin, there will be a double-elimination round at 1 p.m. The championship round is set for about 4 p.m.

The winning team will receive a free trip to the national event in Washington, D.C., April 25-29 to compete against their peers from across the U.S.

Rapid City Stevens High School, winner of the 2018 South Dakota Regional High School Science Bowl, will defend its title against other participating schools, including:

Hitchcock-Tulare
Huron
Northwestern
Parker
Rapid City Central
Redfield
Sioux Falls Roosevelt
West Central
Winner

The Science Bowl’s fast-paced quiz format requires students to answer questions about biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy and math in as little as five seconds. Each team is made up of four students, a student alternate and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.

The Science Bowl encourages student involvement in math and science, inspires the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields, and rewards superior academic achievement.

The public is invited to watch the competition and support the teams. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
