DOMESTIC ABUSE MONTH PART 2

October in Domestic Violence awarenes month.  The numbers are staggering with over 27 percent of women and 23 percent of men experience domestic violence by an intimate partner or stalking. The incidents may continue to escalate to dangerous situations.  Abusers have some common traits.  An abuser often denies the existence or minimizes the seriousness of violence and its effect on the victim and other family members. An abuser has low self esteem and feels powerless and ineffective in the world and may seem pleasant and charming between periods of violence and is often seen as a nice person to others outside of the relationship.  There are many ways domestic abuse shelters can help, Jan Manolis with the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center said the requests for help are not all the same.

Manolis said the family safe center is there to help no matter what the need is and reiterates domestic abuse affects both genders.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799-SAFE.  Manolis said the hotlines are important to keep in mind because if domestic violence victims do not seek help from them the next hotline number they call could be the suicide prevention line.

She talks about the local 24 hour hotline numbers.

A fundraiser for the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center will be held Saturday at the Crossroads with the Dweebs performing at a Halloween party.  Doors open at 7, the concert is from 8-11 pm.
