City Approves Variance Request at Former Huron Mall

The city has approved a zoning variance that will allow Sunmart Holdings LLC to expand its operations at the former Huron Mall.

The variance states that Sunmart Holdings LLC may:

  • Install 2 hopper bins limited to 30 feet in height.
  • Construct a shop to house maintenance equipment and to do some company-related fabrication.
  • Construct agricultural research facility or commercial greenhouse for organic and hydroponic food production on the northwest part of the property.

Owner Danny Dale has also agreed to build a six foot high fence to shield neighbors and move the truck entrance to the southwest part of the property on Lincoln Avenue.

Dale says the expansion is necessary to help offset the cost of maintenance on the building.

Dr. Mike Fuchs was among those speaking in opposition to the project.

When asked why the project couldn’t be moved to the industrial park, Dale said he estimated the cost of relocating to be between $4 and $5 million dollars.

The variance will also allow Premier Bankcard to add signage to its part of the building. The code states that signage cannot exceed 400 square feet.

City planner Ralph Borkowski stated that most of what Sunmart LLC Holdings was requesting was already permitted in an area zoned general business district.
