Board of Education Hears from Educators and the Public on Earlier Start Date

Educators, Huron Board of Education members, and parents spoke last night on the matter of a new school calendar.

The choice has been narrowed down two calendars; the current post-labor day start which has been in place for the past four years, and another calendar which would start school on Aug. 20th, 2018 with classes being dismissed during the State Fair.

Superintendent Terry Nebelsick says community values will play a big part in determining the calendar.

High school principal Mike Radke says he believes starting after Labor Day hurts students in several ways.

Radke said the late start also affects students at the other end of the spectrum.

Radke says the late start also affects student participation in activities.

Parent and former calendar committee member, Jen Bragg asked the board to consider the needs of all students in the district when making a decision.

Board member Garret Bischoff says he is concerned about the impact an earlier start would have on State Fair attendance.

Nebelsick will now take the matter back to the calendar committee. The board could vote at the Feb. 12th meeting.
