More than 250 people are now better prepared in case of a home fire emergency, following an American Red Cross Sound the Alarm event in Huron on Saturday. For the fourth year, the Huron Fire Department and the American Red Cross partnered to make the event possible.
Teams of firefighters, Red Cross volunteers and community members visited homes to install smoke alarms, free of charge. Residents were also given fire safety information and a guide on how to make an emergency escape plan for their home.
In just a few hours, 326 smoke alarms were installed in 73 homes. More than 250 Huron residents were assisted on Saturday alone and are now better prepared in case of an emergency. This program receives support from the United Way Heartland Region and many other community organizations and businesses.
This event is part of a nationwide Red Cross effort to save lives and help end home fire tragedies. In just 16 days – from April 28 to May 13 – volunteers and partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms across the country. Communities were selected in every state and the community of Huron represents South Dakota in this nationwide campaign.
Anyone who was not home during the canvass or was outside of the canvass area can go to www.getasmokealarm.org or text “alarm” to 1-844-811-0100. A Red Cross representative will contact you to schedule an installation.
