The National Weather Service weather radio transmitter near Wessington is running but with a reduced signal. The tower was completely off the air earlier this week due to a power outage at the tower site. Crews had to get through heavy snow to restore power to the transmitter. However the reduced power is the result of ice on the facilities. The signal strength of the transmitter is expected to improve as ice build up melts away. Weather service officials are closely monitoring the situation in case transmitting conditions do not improve. The Wessington tower site was down three years ago when an ice storm brought the tower site near Vayland crashing to the ground. The National Weather Service is encouraging those who can’t get the signal from the Wessington tower to try the Arlington transmitter at 162-point-525 megahertz or the Mitchell transmitter at 162-point-450 megahertz
