This Friday, the Watertown Police Department will begin enforcing a new city ordinance banning the use of electronic communications devices while driving. Captain Ryan Remmers with the Watertown Police Department says the ordinance is commonly referred to as the “texting ban”.

He says the ordinance defines what types of electronics are prohibited.

The city of Huron’s ordinance says you can be ticketed for eating while driving if eating causes you to be distracted. Remmers says Watertowns ordinance doesn’t go that far.

An electronic message does not include voice or other data transmitted as a result of making a phone call. Those caught violating the new ordinance face a $200 fine. Watertown joins Huron, Sioux Falls and Brookings as communities with texting and drving bans.
