Volesky Announces Plan For Law Enforcement Committee

Attorney General candidate Ron Volesky announced late Tuesday a proposal that would create a State and Tribal Law Enforcement Commission if he is elected in November. Volesky says while crime in Indian Country is largely regarded as a tribal and federal jurisdictional issue, he believes its important for South Dakota to look at ways the state could be helpful in assisting tribes with law enforcement. The Huron Democrat suggests training and educational programs be used to help combat crime on or near reservations and in reservation communities. The Commission would consist of law enforcement and judicial personnel from tribal communities and state government. Volesky is challenging current Attorney General, Republcian Marty Jackley for the AG’s seat.
