Violent Crime Down, Drug Offenses Up in SD

The 2016 Crime in South Dakota report was released on Monday.  South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says that he is pleased with the report, and especially the fact that the number violent crimes has decreased in the state.

Drug offenses, however, did increase in South Dakota in 2016 by 12.5 percent.  Jackley says this mirrors a national trend.

Jackley says the state is fortunate that another drug has not been more of a problem.

South Dakota law enforcement agencies reported a total of 42,200 arrests in 2016.  Among those were 21 murders, 96 sex offenses, nearly 4,800 assaults, and nearly 7,700 drug or narcotic crimes.
