USDA Fluid Milk Purchase To Benefit Several Food Banks Including Feeding South Dakota

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced its purchasing $50 million worth of fluid milk to distribute to U.S. food banks. It’s purchasing a variety of consumer-friendly milk varieties including whole, 2 percent and 1 percent and skim. Feeding America which is affiliated with Feeding South Dakota will be one of the beneficiaries of the milk. Feeding South Dakota CEO Matt Gassen says they’ll be sharing the fluid milk with their partner organizations across the state.

He says having the fluid milk provided to them helps them reach their goal of supplying the nutritional needs of the needy.

South Dakota Dairy Producers Association President Marv Post says the USDA purchase has several benefits, not only helping the food banks but also assisting dairy producers and getting extra product off the market.

The fluid milk purchase is being paid for through Section 32 funds and is not part of the trade aid package announced earlier by the USDA.
