Union Group To Speak With Developmental Center Employees

(AP) – A union representing government workers has scheduled meetings with employees at the South Dakota Developmental Center.  Some former employees have accused the Redfield center of having a hostile administration and a dangerous work environment. The facility also is dealing with a staff shortage that has resulted in required overtime for some employees.
Center Director Jan Banghart has said the facility is using a variety of options to advertise open positions. She also has said focus groups have been formed to work on worker retention, recruitment and better support for staff.  The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will hold two meetings with center workers on Feb. 11 to discuss the prospect of unionizing.  The center has 338 positions, with about 40 currently unfilled.
