Thompson Found Guilty But Mentally Ill

A Beadle County jury returned a verdict in the Edwin Thompson murder trial Friday, the six-men, six-woman jury needed only an hour and a half to decide if Thompson was guilty or not of second degree murder…

Third Circuit Judge Jon Erickson thanked the jury for their service after announcing Thompson’s fate….

Both sides were given 30 minutes to recap their cases for the Jury. Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore told jurors the defense didn’t prove their burden of providing clear and convincing evidence Thompson was insane….

Thompson lawyer Ron Volesky used his full 30 minutes to prove their witnesses on mental illness were more than qualified to evaluate Thompson. He also questioned the State’s use of a police interview with Thompson…

Moore said he thought the Thompson trial was the least likely of the four homicide in Huron in 2009 to go to trial. He is pleased with the verdict.
