Taxes Collected on Out of State, Online Sellers Total Just Over $1 Million

A bill passed last year by the South Dakota legislature required out of state sellers to collect sales taxes on any sales over one hundred thousand dollars. A report from the Department of Revenue shows one hundred active licenses, with total taxes paid of just over one million dollars since last July.
Shawn Lyons, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, was one of the drivers behind that law

Lyons says the state has been among the leaders in pushing for those online taxes

Lyons says with the state dependent on sales taxes, getting the online sellers to pay in is critical

Amazon was among the companies agreeing in February to also submit sales taxes.
