Supreme Court Hearing Set For Allowing Recording Devices In Trial Courts

The South Dakota Supreme Court is holding a public hearing tomorrow to consider two proposals that would allow cameras and recording equipment in South Dakota trial courts. A committee appointed by the Supreme Court recommends a rule that allows the devices in circuit court trials and other proceeding be used as long as a judge and BOTH defense and prosecution agree to the usage at least one week in advance. A proposal from media and news organizations presumes trail court proceeding are open to cameras and audio recorders unless a judge believes they would interfere with a defendants ability to receive a fair trial. Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore says he’s in favor of cameras in the courtroom….
