The City of Huron is urging resident to discharge sump pumps into city streets and not the sanitary sewer system. High water flows have been reported at the city’s wastewater treatment plant and in the sanitary sewer system. Mayor Dave McGirr says residents risk a possible back of raw sewage in thier basements if sump pumps continue to expell water into the sanitary sewers. Officials will be doing door-to-door checks in areas where lift stations are overloading. McGirr says tif the flows do not subside soon the risk exisists for a failure of pumps or a main line collapse. A main line collapse sent raw sewage into homes and the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls last year. Anyone caught discharging a sump pump illegally is subject to a 200-dollar fine. Fines will not be issued for anyone who requests help in finding out where there sump pump discharges to. McGirr is asking residents who don’t know where there sump pumps go to contact either the city or a plumber.
