As the summer travel season begins in South Dakota, so does the “tourism tax.”
That is an additional one point five percent sales tax added to many tourism related businesses through the end of August.
Shawn Lyons, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, says this summer season will be tightly connected to the ag economy
Lyons says the members of his organization accept the need for the tourism tax
Lyons says they have been hearing questions about the tax and the collection process
Tourism contributed just under four billion dollars to the state’s economy last year.
