Small businesses are a large part of the communities throughout the region, and summer is sometimes the busiest time of year for seasonal operations. Some small retailers earn as much as 50 percent or more or their total annual sales between May and September. Chris Chavez is the regional communications director for the Small Business Administration. He says all the summer business causes cash flow and other problems.
Chavez says that small business suffer from undercapitalization because of inventory issues and the lack of an online presence through a website or social media. He says small businesses need to embrace their ability to serve niche markets.
He says that some businesses tend to lose focus in the summer months by interrupting productivity with office parties and social events, which should be held until after the season. Hiring the wrong employees for important positions also hurts any business when it comes to customer experience and satisfaction.
Through the SBA, there are plenty of resources for small business owners struggling to innovatively balance profits over a seasonal marketing period.
