The National Weather Service says a severe thunderstorm that produced straight line winds in excess of 80 mph Wednesday held together across four states.
The storm originally developed across portions of northwestern South Dakota and began tracking to the southeast. Before the day was over, it had moved across South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa before finally dissipating in Illinois.
In addition to the 83 mph wind gust reported at the Huron Airport, the storm also produced 74 mph winds in Brookings.
Residents in Western Minnesota, from near Lake Benton, MN to areas south of the city of Marshall, MN reported damage to barns, sheds, power poles, trees, and crops. The storm spawned two small and brief tornadoes south of the city of Marshall, MN. Wind speeds to near 100 mph were recorded.
The storm reorganized and moved across south central Minnesota and into Iowa, resulting in widespread wind damage and heavy rains.
