Severe Thunderstorm winds of 70 miles an hour knocked power out to Wessington last night. A line of storms moved through the town on the Hand/Beadle County line around 7 pm. The gusty winds tore a piece of the roof off of the Vern’s Manufacturing building and sent the metal roofing into power lines causing the city wide black-out. Power lines were also reported down in rural areas around Wessington. The winds also damaged a number of trees in town. Other than the roof damage at Vern’s Manufacturing there was no other buildings damaged. Emergency crews blocked off all entrances to Wessington from US Highway 14. Branches were down in Huron as well. A power line to a street light at 5th and Frank was downed by the winds and Power was reported out around 15th and Utah. Northwestern Energy crews worked through the night to restore power to Wessington. 70 mile an hour winds were reported nine miles southeast of Miller and 62 miles an hour in Miller.
