PIERRE, SD – South Dakota House Democratic Leader Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton says he will introduce two measures that seek to limit state spending in the long term. Hunhoff says one measure would limit the annual growth in state spending to the rate of inflation up to a maximum of 3 percent, the same limit placed on state aid to schools. He says the other bill would limit state spending to 99 percent of expected state revenues. The leader of the House Democratic minority says if those measures had been in effect during the past decade, South Dakota would not be facing a deficit now.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard will announce his budget proposals on Wednesday. He has said he wants to cut spending by at least 10 percent in all state agencies.
