A man suspected of shoplifting in Huron attempted to elude authorities at a high rate of speed Tuesday evening.
According to Huron Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Cody Dossett from Sioux Falls, who had just shoplifted from a local store. Dossett failed to stop and attempted to flee at high speeds.
At one point, Dossett drove through a yard, running over a tree while the homeowner was in the yard.
Officers pursued Dossett eastbound on 33rd St SE and attempted to spike the subject’s vehicle at 21st and Sherman Ave. Dossett left the roadway to avoid the spike strip and then continued eastbound.
Van Diepen says due to the offenses committed and the speeds and manner of driving by Dossett the pursuit was terminated by the Huron Police Department.
A short time later a Beadle County Deputy engaged in a pursuit with the same vehicle.
Huron police officers successfully deployed a spike strip in an attempt to slow Dossett down prior to entering the City of Huron.
Dossett eventually lost control of his vehicle going off the roadway and coming to a stop in the south ditch of Hwy 14.
Dossett was transported to HRMC for self-inflicted injuries.
Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore says Dossett has been charged with aggravated eluding.
