Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Laurie Shelton shared some economic statistics during her semi-annual report to the city.
Shelton said year to date through the month of July, the city saw an increase in the so-called bed, board, and booze tax.
Shelton says gross receipts better reflect the economic impact of the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in June.
The Chamber sent a survey to members asking for feedback on store foot traffic and sales during the rodeo. Shelton said many businesses saw an increase in activity.
In other business, the city approved a variance request from Fieldstone Group LLC to allow a fitness center at 159 Market St. SW. The area is zoned general industrial district.
Commissioners also approved a payment of $200,000 to the State Fair to help finish paying for the Nordby Exhibit Hall. The city had originally pledged to pay the amount in annual installments of $40,000.00 for five years. The Fair recently requested the city make a lump sum payment. Mayor Paul Aylward said there was money available in reserves to make the payment.
