Executive Director of the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau, Laurie Shelton gave her semi-annual update to the Huron City Commission last night. Among the highlights of the report was an update on the National Jr. High Finals Rodeo which will be held in Huron in June of 2018 and 2019.
Shelton says the Chamber has sought input from organizers in Lebanon, Tennessee, the city which hosted the event this year.
Around 1129 contestants participated in the rodeo this year, Shelton says the event is expected to be even bigger in Huron. The higher number of participants combined with the influx of family members, vendors and sponsors, means Huron’s hotels and motels may not have enough rooms available during that time to completely to meet the need for housing.
Organizers in Lebanon indicated that the rodeo brought in a million dollars to the city.
Shelton, and conventions and events director MiKayla Ketelhut stopped in Des Moines, Iowa on their way home from Tennessee to bid on the 2020 Red Power Roundup. That effort paid off.
Shelton says the Chamber will also be working on the bidding process for state softball.
Leadership Huron is making some changes. Classes will be half-days and will be held twice a month.
