The effort to find a missing Pierre man has made little progress as time continues to tick on the life of Leroy Nye. The 80-year-old Nye was staying with family in Saint Lawrence when he left the home around 1:30 AM Sunday in a dark green 2001 Chrysler Intrepid with South Dakota plates 33-m 2-0-2. Rainy weather Tuesday prevented the Civil Air Patrol from conducting aerial searches of areas along U-S Highways 281 and 14 and State Highway 34. Hand County officials are pleading with the public to check for signs of suspicious activity, unusual tracks or anything out of the ordinary like a car resting in a parking lot. Nye likes to frequent farm implement stores and sales barns and Perkins is one of his favorite restaurants. Nye’s family is pleading with anyone and everyone across South Dakota as well as neighboring states to look search for Nye. The green Intrepid he took had a full gas tank and a range of up to 400 miles. Officials are asking those in the Pierre and Canning areas to be extra vigilant as Nye lives in Pierre and has a farm near Canning. Private land owners are asked to search any and all buildings on their land for signs of Nye’s presence. Nye was last seen wearing a T-shirt and underpants. He suffers from dementia and has likely been without food drink or medication for nearly three days. Anyone spotting Nye or the green Chrysler is asked to contact law enforcement immediately.
