The South Dakota Farmers Union has proposed amending the state constitution so that a commission redraws the state’s legislative districts every 10 years instead of lawmakers. Attorney General Marty Jackley announced the proposed constitutional amendment on Tuesday and explained its impact.
For the constitutional amendment to appear on the ballot, supporters will need to gather 27,741 signatures by November of this year. Jackley says his office has seen an increase in the number of ballot measures recently.
Measures that are set to appear on the 2016 ballot involve issues such as technical education, the youth minimum wage, and a change to election law.
