SD Senate revives bill limiting traffic camera use

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Senate has brought back and passed a measure regulating red-light traffic cameras after it was killed in committee.  Senators voted 26-9 to support the bill.  The main sponsor of the bill Rep. Peggy Gibson says it was “revived and revised.” The Huron Democrat has been working on this legislation for years.  Senators amended the bill to address problems raised by the committee. It now refers only to unmanned, red-light cameras. It prohibits cities from contracting with private corporations to monitor the devices.  Gibson says devices with radars and cameras can issue tickets to the wrong person and violate the constitutional right to due process.  It now goes back to the House for approval.
