SD Regents Approve 3 Percent Tuition Hike

The South Dakota Board of Regents voted to increase tuition and fees just under three percent for the fall term.

Regents Vice President Kevin Schieffer of Sioux Falls, says they recognized a tight revenue situation

Schieffer says the six universities have had to make some substantial cuts

Schieffer says as costs have gone up, most of the burden now falls on students

Tuition and fees now make up about sixty percent of the universities budgets. The state portion has now slipped to about forty percent. The legislature was not able to find the money to continue a tuition freeze for another year.
