Rail issues are one of the top concerns for South Dakota Farmers Union members attending this week’s National Farmers Union Fly In in Washington. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says having rail access and cars available during a large expected harvest and when the Chinese market reopens is a primary worry.
He says with the large harvest and much of the crop in or going into storage, rail access becomes a more critical need.
Sombke says his group met with both the head of the Surface Transportation Board and Senator John Thune’s staff to air their rail concerns.
Sombke says it’s important for farmers to voice their rail concerns to both the Surface Transportation Board and Senator Thune who chairs the Commerce Committee which has jurisdiction over rail shipping.
