The uncertainty continues over the fate of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Both Canadian and Mexican officials are expressing concern about President Trump possibly withdrawing from the pact. Mexican officials say they’ll drop the trade deal if Trump triggers a six-month withdrawal notice. South Dakota Corn Growers Executive Director Lisa Richardson says the President needs to step back and try to find some solutions.
She says all corn growers stand to lose a great deal if NAFTA is abandoned.
Richardson says besides corn, Mexico also buys a large amount of dried distillers grains from the U.S.
Richardson says the U.S. does $2.2 billion worth of ag trade annually with Mexico and Canada is the second largest market for U.S. ethanol. The next round of NAFTA talks gets underway in Canada on January 23.
