House Bill 1087, which allows school boards to decide if teachers should be armed in schools, passed the House on Tuesday afternoon on a 42-27 vote. Representative Scott Craig of Rapid City was the main sponsor of the bill.
Representative Jon Hansen of Dell Rapids also testified in favor of the bill.
Representative Peggy Gibson of Huron said the bill is unnecessary.
Representative Scott Parsley of Madison also opposed the bill.
The bill now goes to committee on the Senate side.
