While it won’t be part of the official summer study topics for South Dakota legislators, sales tax exemptions have been getting more attention as state revenues stall.
House Speaker Mark Mickelson of Sioux Falls says it would be hard to pry away many of those exemptions
Senator Craig Kennedy of Yankton has said many exemptions have been in law for many years, and should at least be looked at.
Mickelson says it would mean taxes going up for someone
Kennedy also said there is concern about property tax exemptions for hospitals and other large facilities.
Mickelson says, again, there would be pass through costs
There have been estimates that the state allows as much as one billion dollars in sales tax exemptions.
