The South Dakota Department of Revenue says Wessington and three other municipalities in South Dakota will be adding or increasing their general sales and use taxes. Wessington is increasing it’s general sales and use tax by one-percent to two-percent. Mellette in Spink County, Pukwana in Brule County and New Effington in Roberts Couny are all adding a two-percent sales and use tax. The changes will become effective January First. Municipal sales and use taxes apply to all sales that are subject to state taxes and are reported on the same tax return. The state Revenue Department collects and administers those taxes on behalf of the cities they are imposed in. The overall South Dakota sales and use tax is four-percent.
