Road Work To Begin On Major Highways In Huron

Road construction projects on two major state highways that run through Huron are set to begin Monday. An asphalt overlay project will begin on U-S Highway 14. A new asphalt surface will be placed over the existing surface from the two lane section west of Huron to just east of Custer Avenue. Frontage or service roads along U-S Highway 14 will be milled and resurfaced and the bridge over Ravine Lake, that is currently closed on the north service road, will be removed. New lighting will be installed along U-S Highway 14 from Lincoln to Jersey Avenue. Traffic on 14 will be down to one lane each direction and placed head-to-head during some phases of the project. Work will also start Monday on South Dakota Highway 37. Upper Plains Contracting of Aberdeen will begin sawing the existing concrete surface from 15th Street to 27th street on the north end of Huron near the airport and James Valley Christian. Starting April 15th Midland Construction of Huron will begin removing concrete and grading Highway 37. A single lane of traffic wil be maintained in each direction with an 11 foot width restriction. Drivers should be watching for merging and sudden slowing traffic and be aware of construction equipment and workers. Both projects are set to end October 18th. Asphalt Paving of Huron will be working on the Highway 14 project. The combined cost of both projects is 11-million dollars.
