Retired Police Service Dog Will Remain With Officer and His Family

A retired police service dog will stay with his Huron family.

Back in 2012, the department purchased a K9 service dog named Cody.

Detective Derek Layher was the handler for Cody and trained continually with him. The dog has lived with the Layher family since coming to Huron.

Cody’s certification ran out earlier this month, and due to an injury, he will be unable to be re-certified as a police service dog.

Last night, the city commission voted to appraise Cody as surplus property with a value of $1.00.

This will allow Layher to purchase Cody and keep the Belgian Malinois with his family.
