This week the South Dakota Farm Bureau is hosting a series of meetings to help producers learn if they’re in compliance with EPA regulations on Oil Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures. Farm Bureau CEO Wayne Smith says producers who have storage of oil and or oil products on their farms prior to 2002 must have a spill plan in place and on file with the government.
Smith says farmers who have storage on their operations from 2002 to 2013 have until May 10 of this year to come into compliance. He says those producers who have less than 55 gallons stored, they can self certify.
Area meetings will be February 27 in Mitchell, the 28th. In Platte and Yankton and March 1 in Lennox. Other meetings are being held in Wall, Pierre, and Redfield. There is no cost to attend and no pre registration required. Check with South Dakota Farm Bureau for more information or call 605-280-1319.
