This week, the American Red Cross presented an award to the city of Huron and the Huron Fire Department in recognition of its support of Sound the Alarm. The program provides free smoke alarms to the public and partners with communities to install them.
Abbie Peterson, Chief Development Director for the Eastern South Dakota Chapter of the Red Cross, says since its inception the program has saved 642 lives including two in South Dakota.
Executive Director Patty Brooks says the goal this year was to install 100,000 smoke alarms in cities across the U.S.
Brooks says an additional 67 smoke alarms were installed during the fall campaign in Huron.
