Fortin says the average recycling collection in March was 34-point-two-five pounds. Huron homes averaged 111-pounds of regular garbage which totaled 441-tons of trash being hauled to Pierre for disposal. Eighty-percent of Huron residents are taking part in the recycling program but Fortin says to reach the 25-percent reduction goal of removing recyclable goods from the solid waste stream, more residents are needed to take part….

As far as violations of the program, Fortin says they’ve been dealing with around 60 customers per week….

The biggest issues they see are with Styrofoam, pizza boxes and items being bagged and put into containers. Fortin says the Solid Waste Department is continuing with education efforts about Huron’s single stream recycling program. He noted that seven large containers are being used by multi-family housing units in Huron and two such bins are available for public use at the library and behind the Huron Municipal Building.
