A preliminary hearing is set for Friday in the case of James Harris, the 28-year-old Minnesota man accused of driving drunk and killing 16-year-old Zachary Eichstadt of De Smet. Judge Tim Tucker denied a motion to reduce Harris’ 250-thousand dollar bond. Defense attorney Jeff Burns said Harris is a life long Minnesota resident working construction in South Dakota. He was staying with friend who are also working construction and has a girlfriend in the state he could stay with if released. Kingsbury County States Attorney Gregg Gass countered that Harris has an outstanding warrant for failing to inform a probation officer of a change of residency and that he failed to complete substance abuse and anger management classes. Harris is facing charges of vehicular homicide, felony hit and run and drunk driving.
