Postal Service Clears The Air On Closings

An official with the US Postal Service spent most of yesterday clearing the air with media outlets across the Dakotas after a story was released indicating five postal sorting facilities were closing. USPS Spokesman Pete Nowacki says no decisions have been made on closing ANY facilities including the Dakota Central sorting facility in Huron. Nowacki says studies on the process are continuing and no action will be taken until sometime in April. Nowacki declined further comment as was busy late Monday afternoon taking numerous calls from media across the region. He says officials above him in the postal service were handling dealing with the Associated Press, who release a story saying mail processing centers in Huron, Rapid City and three in North Dakota were “slated to close”. The US Postal Service has previously stated their intentions to move sorting operations from Pierre and Aberdeen to Huron, then hinted at possibly moving some Huron operations to Sioux Falls. Nowacki says a public hearing in Huron would be required before any decision is made and that has not happened yet.
