The National Pork Producers Council is asking the U.S. Senate to repeal Country of Origin Labeling prior to taking their August break. The House has already passed a repeal measure. South Dakota Pork Producers Council President Lester Moeller of Miller says if the Senate doesn’t repeal COOL before the recess, tariffs could start to take effect anytime during the interim.
Moeller says once punitive tariffs are instituted, it could take a long time to remove them.
He says COOL has been debated for a long time and the U.S. keeps losing when it’s challenged at the World Trade Organization level.
Canada is expected to call for $2.4 Billion in tariffs, while Mexico is looking at $713 million dollars.
