Pig Virus Cases Increasing But Vacant In South Dakota

A pig virus first seen in the U.S. this spring has been on the increase with over 200 cases nationally as of last week. South Dakota has not seen much of the disease yet. State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says pork industry officials are working to try and find some solutions to the problem if it does crop up because it can cause severe economic harm if it spreads.

Oedekoven says it’s important producers practice good bio security on their operations as a preventative measure for the virus.

Oedekoven says most of the focus on the disease, called PED in the Midwest has been in Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. He says it does not affect people and is not a food safety issue.
