Out of the Darkness Walk Scheduled for Sept. at Ravine Lake

 Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, and South Dakota is ranked #9 in the nation for suicide deaths.

To raise awareness and funds, more than 100 people from throughout Huron are expected to participate in the first annual Huron Out of the Darkness Walk hosted by the South Dakota chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The walk will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday September 15th at Ravine Lake.

This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs.

“We walk to raise awareness about this important health issue. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15-24. We hope that by walking we save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” said  Angela Drake, AFSP South Sakota board chair.

The Huron Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 150 walks being held nationwide this year. Walks will also be held in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Milbank, and Rapid City. The walks are expected to unite more than 25 thousand walkers nation wide and raise over a million dollars for suicide prevention efforts.

With the walks last year, South Dakota raised over $50,000 and had 2,000 participants.
