PIERRE, SD – South Dakota officials say some stretches of the James River remain well above flood stage heading into freeze-up, setting the stage for more flooding next spring. The James has dropped below flood stage by fall the past three years, but this year it’s as much as 3 ½ feet above flood stage in some areas. Public Safety Secretary Trevor Jones says river valley residents should take steps to protect themselves and their property, such as identifying where to get sandbags, maintaining sump pumps and moving furniture and valuable items out of harm’s way. Officials say much public infrastructure and personal property has already been moved to higher ground. Agriculture Secretary Walt Bones says farmers and ranchers should be cautious about moving machinery and livestock back into the flood plain.
