Police officers protect and serve, without the expectation of awards, but six Huron police officers were acknowledged for their determination, courage and community interaction at a ceremony Thursday night at the Huron Municipal Building. Public Safety Director Gary Will Jr. presented Officer Sam Freng with the Community Service Award….
Freng has declined compensation from the Huron Hockey Association for his role as an assistant varsity coach and his bond with the players off the ice has been noticed by the hockey program. Merit Awards were presented to Officers Cory Borg, Derek Layher and Sergeant Brandon Neitzert….
It is Neitzert and Borg’s second Merit Award. Will presented the department’s highest honor to Officers Mark Johnson and Tim Opheim for rescuing a man from a burning apartment last March….
Johnson was named Officer of the Year in 2012 and both Johnson and Opheim received Lifesaving Awards from the H-P-D last year.
