MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) – A retired businessman from Huron is donating $1 million to Mitchell Technical Institute.
Earl Nordby’s gift is the largest cash donation ever made to a technical school in South Dakota. The Mitchell school’s Trades Center will be renamed for him. The 83-year-old Nordby is a former longtime owner of a regional soft drink bottling company. He is making the donation to MTI with his daughters, Diane DesLauriers and Linda Scher. The school says it will use the money for scholarships, signs along Interstate 90 and an endowment to help fund faculty wages.
South Dakota Secretary of Education Melody Schopp calls Nordby’s donation an “unprecedented gift.” MTI has 1,259 students enrolled this fall.
